Project Overview
The product:
First Time Parents is an app and responsive website that will help connect new parents to discover curated milestones throughout parenthood.
The Problem:
According to the National Center for Infants, Toddlers, and Families, nearly half (48 percent) of new parents don’t feel they have the support they need when they’re stressed. And make no mistake — caring for a newborn can involve some stressful moments.
The Goal:
Design an app that will improve education throughout milestones of parenthood.
My role:
UX designer leading the app and responsive website design from conception to delivery
Responsibilities:
Conducting interviews, paper and digital wireframe, low and high-fidelity prototyping, conducting usability studies, accounting for accessibility, and iterating on designs.
Understanding the user
• User research
• Personas
• Problem statements
• Competitive audit
• Ideation
User Research - Summary
I surveyed parents to develop interview questions, which were then used to conduct user interviews. Most interview participants reported feeling nervous, but they actively try to ask their friends and family for advice. The feedback received through research made it very clear that users would be open and willing to work towards eliminating food waste if they had access to an easy-to-use tool to help guide them.
Persona: Tiffany
Problem statement:
Tiffany is a working Account Manager who needs reminders, suggestions, and coaching about parenting more often with her phone because she is always on the go and wants something easy to look up.
Persona: Jason
Problem statement:
Jason is a working Software Engineer who needs a guiding modern way that makes parenting easy because kids are facing new challenges.
Competitive Audit
An audit of a few competitors’ products provided direction on gaps and opportunities to address with the First Time Parents app.
Ideation
I did a quick ideation exercise to come up with ideas for how to address gaps identified in the competitive audit. My focus was specifically on waste tracking and simple recipe features.
Starting the Design
• Digital wireframes
• Low-fidelity prototype
• Usability studies
Digital Wireframes
After ideating and drafting some paper wireframes, I created the initial designs for the First Time Parents app. These designs focus on delivering personalized guidance to users to help organize the evidence from professionals and the community.
Low-Fidelity Prototype
To prepare for usability testing, I created a low-fidelity prototype that connected the user flow of viewing an item about to expire and using it in a recipe.
Usability Study - Parameters
Usability Study - Findings
These were the main findings uncovered by the usability study:
Refining the Design
• Mockups
• High-fidelity prototype
• Accessibility
Mockups
Based on the insights from the usability studies, I applied design changes like providing a clear section from the home screen to browse articles that specifically use items available in “Pregnancy”.
Mockups
Additional design changes included adding an option to “color” to the organized pages, and providing a clearer indication of what category they are browsing.
Mockups
High-fidelity prototype
The high-fidelity prototype followed the same user flow as the low-fidelity prototype, including design changes made after the usability study.
Accessibility considerations

With the app designs completed, I started work on designing the responsive website. I used the First Time Parents sitemap to guide the organizational structure of each screen’s design to ensure a cohesive and consistent experience across devices.
