Context:
I was tasked with redesigning the General Robot Startup Guide to enhance usability, particularly for iPad users. The goal was to create a more intuitive, user-friendly experience for technicians during the setup and operation of the robot. This guide provides step-by-step instructions for unpacking, installing the controller and robot, connecting cables, and operating the teach pendant, while emphasizing safety precautions throughout the process.
Design Approach:
My primary goal was to make the guide more accessible and efficient for technicians working with robots in real-world environments. I focused on creating a digital format that would be easy to navigate on an iPad, reducing the need for paper manuals or additional devices. The design needed to be clean, clear, and simple, with visual aids and safety warnings strategically placed to enhance understanding and reduce the risk of error.
Creative Process:
I started by analyzing the original guide's content and identifying areas where users might struggle. To improve accessibility, I restructured the information into easily digestible sections and incorporated high-quality visuals to assist with each setup step. I emphasized safety by clearly marking warnings about power sources and heavy equipment handling. I also optimized the guide for tablet use, ensuring that it would be easy to navigate through touchscreens, making the process more efficient for technicians on the go.
Outcome/Results:
The redesigned General Robot Startup Guide successfully improved the user experience for technicians, allowing them to access detailed instructions and safety information quickly and efficiently on an iPad. The digital format streamlined the setup process, reducing the reliance on printed manuals and other devices, which increased overall efficiency in the field. Technicians could now focus more on the physical installation, with a guide that supported their work seamlessly.
